Facilities
Most Health centres in Spain are within a few minutes of any place of residence and if necessary a patient can even arrange a home visit.
Local surgeries in rural areas and in small villages only open on certain days of the week with visits from healthcare staff from the surrounding area.
Hospitals offer specialised attention, with access via referral from primary healthcare services.
Accident and Emergency services are available at some health centres and all hospitals, more information on this can be found at the Ministry of Health website, or Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo

Health Care and Health Insurance

Do not be under the misconception that because Spain is an E.U. Country that you are automatically entitled to health care because you are a resident.
You are however entitled to free emergency care if you are on holiday and if you are carrying a European Health insurance card. This card replaces the old E 111 form which since 1st Jan 2006 has not been valid. For more information on obtaining a European Health insurance card please visit EHIC to apply on line.
Please remember that the European Health Insurance Card only covers you for emergencies and is not a substitute for travel insurance.

The healthcare system in Spain
Spain is divided into autonomous communities 17 in total, including the Canary Islands and the Balearics and the North African regions.

Each region takes individual responsibility for health care, and the only the overall budget is under the jurisdiction of central government.
The Spanish health system combines both private and public healthcare and within each separate state
The National Health System in Spain has a large network of hospitals and health centres throughout the country which offer health care services to spanish nationals and residents. Low cost or Free health care is given to those who pay into the social security system or Seguridad Social as it is known.
