Some 20,000 buildings are believed to have been affected in what has been the worst earthquake in 50 years. Many of the medieval buildings and streets in Lorca have been badly damaged by the tremor.
The Town of Lorca has a population of 90,000.
The local residents now fear that there could be another seismological event and are reluctant to return to their homes. Lorca's Mayor Francisco Jodar has said that most of the town's population had spent the night sheltering in their cars, streets, public squares or other towns.
The military are now in the town, searching the rubble for victims and survivors and beginning the clean-up operation and inspecting buildings to see if they are safe to enter or return to.
Spain has many earthquakes each month but most of them are so small they are not noticed.
Because Murcia is close to the large faultline beneath the Mediterranean Sea where the European and African continents meet. It is the country's most seismically active area and has suffered other quakes in 2005 and 1999.

The people of Lorca are assessing the damage from the two earthquakes that killed nine and injured at least 140 people on Wednesday evening.
The magnitude 5.2 quake hit early in the evening and around two hours later a second earthquake measuring 4.4 struck .
